English Literature Study Program Holds Book Response Writing Training for Elementary School Students
The Faculty of Languages and Arts, Universitas Negeri Surabaya once again organized an engaging educational activity through a Book Response Writing Training attended by fifth-grade elementary school students along with English and classroom teachers. The event was held at Building T14, 1st Floor, and became a collaborative learning space that encouraged students to express their ideas and opinions about books creatively.
The program was officially opened by Dr. Ali Mustofa, S.S, M.Pd as the coordinator of the study program. In his opening remarks, he emphasized the importance of developing literacy skills and building students’ confidence in expressing their thoughts through writing from an early age.
The first session was delivered by the homeroom teacher, focusing on introductory activities and interactive discussions with the students. The warm and friendly atmosphere helped the participants feel comfortable and enthusiastic throughout the event.
The main session on book response writing was then presented by Dr. Much. Koiri, M.Si. - Surabaya
. In this session, students learned how to write simple responses to books they had read, including expressing opinions, favorite parts, and personal reflections. The material was designed in an accessible and enjoyable way to match the students’ level and interests.

After the presentation, the students directly practiced writing their own book responses in Bahasa Indonesia. To make the activity more meaningful and collaborative, university students assisted the participants in translating their responses into English. This interaction not only helped the elementary students improve their English exposure but also created a supportive learning environment between university students and school participants.
To maintain excitement and participation, door prizes were given to students who actively participated and bravely volunteered to present their work in front of the audience. The activity was filled with enthusiasm, laughter, and confidence-building moments that encouraged students to keep exploring literacy and language learning.
The event concluded with a group photo session and friendly greetings among participants, teachers, lecturers, and university students. Through this activity, the English Literature Study Program hopes to continue fostering literacy awareness, creativity, and collaborative learning experiences for younger generations.
