Communication Ethics in Group Chats for UNESA Academic Community

Instant messaging platforms are becoming a key part of how academics interact every day. So it is more important than ever to be respectful and professional online. To support a healthy, respectful and inclusive learning environment, Universitas Negeri Surabaya (UNESA) has set out key guidelines regarding group chat communication ethics for all lecturers, staff and students.

Under the tagline "Bijak Berkata, Aman Bersama. Setiap Pesan Mencerminkan Karakter Kita" (Speak Wisely, Stay Safe Together. Every Message Reflects Our Character). It says that online group discussions should be constructive and safe for everyone. It gives clear instructions on what to do and what not to do.

Things you should do:

-        Use polite language

-        Respect privacy

-        Appreciate diverse perspectives

-        Think before you send

-        Use emojis and stickers in the right way

-        Stay on the topic

Avoid the following:

-        Body objectification

-        Insults or Mockery

-        Hate speech & sexual jokes

-        Sharing personal data

-        Unauthorised screenshots

By following these communication ethics, the UNESA academic community continues to create a digital environment based on respect, integrity and safety. Let's talk in a way that is kind and respectful, and make sure our group chats are places where everyone feels welcome and safe!
